Unknown to many Crude Oil was first discovered in Iho-Dimeze community in Ikeduru Local Government of Imo state in 1937 by Shell Petroleum then known as Shell D'Arcy.

For this the oil company established its operational base in Owerri popularly known as Shell camp Owerri.

But Shell later abandoned the oil well in Iho and left for Oloibiri in Rivers state where it claimed to have found oil in large commercial quantities.

In schools they teach kids that Crude Oil was first discovered in Oloibiri in 1956 while Shell have been drilling Oil in South East Nigeria decades before 1956. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This picture was taken the very day Oil was discovered in Iho community by Shell staff, Their families and members of the British colonial government in Nigeria.
